Women operating in various communication fields in the country have been encouraged to take advantage of media spaces available to create a huge presence for themselves and their topics of interest.

Speaking in Mponela on Saturday when she opened the Association for Women in Media (AWOME) first ever Annual General Meeting (AGM), Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule said women scribes need to take advantage of advancements in technology to speak out on various under-reported issues.

She said women have great potential to uplift themselves and reach greater targets using the digital space that has already engulfed our daily lives.

“It is high time women in the media industry used the digital spaces as platforms to bring out crucial debates and reports on various issues.

People out there are tired of hearing and reading obvious reports; there is need for the reports we read to be deeper, bringing out information that ordinary eyes cannot see,” said.

Aside inspiring the women to advance further with their studies, Kamtukule also challenged them to break boundaries of reporting to become reliable international scribes like anyone else.

AWOME Board of Trustee Chairperson, Teresa Ndanga concurred with Kamtukule stating that women in media need to use the digital spaces wisely and be proactive in creative opportunities for reporting.

“Women in the country have the potential to break the boundaries and earn recognition on international scene just like women scribes from other countries have done,” she said.
