The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has announced the successful completion of major maintenance works at the Nkula Power Station, marking a significant step towards improving electricity generation reliability in the country.

The maintenance exercise, which began at 22:00 hours on Thursday, 17 April 2025, was carried out during the Easter holiday period to minimize disruption. According to EGENCO’s statement, the exercise included a range of critical tasks aimed at restoring and enhancing the functionality of power generation infrastructure at both Nkula A and Nkula B powerhouses.

The works involved the demolition of a concrete pile wall at the Nkula A intake, which had been impeding optimal water flow and power generation. In addition, engineers carried out maintenance on a bypass valve of machine number 4 at Nkula B powerhouse. The maintenance program also included broad preventive checks and repairs on various power generation machines and their associated components.

By Monday, 21 April 2025 at 17:36 hours, the first machine at Nkula Power Station was successfully brought back online, with other machines following soon after. As of the latest update, six out of the eight machines at the station were operational, with efforts ongoing to restore the remaining two units.

EGENCO has assured the public and stakeholders that the work is progressing well and that full generation capacity will be restored shortly. The company emphasized that the maintenance was crucial to ensure long-term stability and efficiency in electricity supply across Malawi.

In the media release, EGENCO also took the opportunity to express its apologies for any inconvenience the maintenance works may have caused and thanked the public and all stakeholders for their patience and understanding.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience that may have been caused by this crucial maintenance work. The Company expresses gratitude to the public and all stakeholders for their patience and understanding throughout this time,” reads part of the statement signed by Management.

Nkula Power Station, located along the Shire River, remains one of Malawi’s most important electricity generation sites. Its reliable operation is vital for meeting the nation’s growing energy demands, and the completion of these maintenance works is expected to bolster grid stability and reduce power outages.

EGENCO reiterated its commitment to ongoing investment in infrastructure upgrades and preventive maintenance to support sustainable energy generation and national development goals.
