Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president Enock Chihana has disclosed that the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will have both the presidential candidate and running mate in the forthcoming general elections.
Chihana said he has been earmarked for the country’s second vice president once they are voted into power.
Chihana made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday when the party was announcing its alliance with DPP.
His remarks were echoed by DPP lead alliance negotiator, George Chaponda.
“We have accepted to swallow our pride and have accepted that DPP should take both positions. We have endorsed Peter Mutharika as our torchbearer, and they will choose his running mate from DPP,” he said.
He said the agreement was based on what Malawi is currently going through rather than personal interests.
“The decision to reach this far was mostly based on my personal relationship with Mutharika. We want to serve Malawians better than our personal needs. I would have chosen the presidency, but I thought it not wise,” he said.
Apart from Chaponda, Peter Mukhito, Ben Phiri and Sameer Suleiman also attended the briefing.
