DPP prepares for convention: Calls for NGC meeting

The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has started preparations for a court sanctioned elective convention.

According to a letter by DPP secretary seneral Grezelder Jeffrey, the party will hold the National Governing Council on December 6, 2023.

“I refer to the above captioned subject matter and to my letter dated the 23rd day of October, 2023 to which I do not seem to have received any response to date.

“Your Excellency, the ruling of the Court dated the 29th day of September, 2023 ordered and directed us to conduct duly constituted meetings of the National Governing Council and an elective National Political Conference, popularly referred to as ‘the Convention’, within a period of ninety (90) days from the date of the said ruling. Your Excellency, two months have since elapsed without us taking any steps.

“You may wish to know, Your Excellency that Court orders must be obeyed at all costs and that if one chooses to disobey orders of the Court they may be held in contempt of the Court.

“This is to inform you, Your Excellency, that I will proceed to call for the meeting of the National Governing Council to take place on the 6th day of December, 2023, pursuant to the said Court order and Article 10(13) of the Constitution of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to perform the powers specified in Article 10(10), among others,” reads part of the letter dated November 30, 2023, addressed to party president Peter Mutharika.
