Leaked phone conversations have shown that some opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials have been bankrolling the recent series of anti-government demonstrations that have been taking place in the country.
The conversations, which are in our possession, involve lead organisers of the protests.
In one of the audio clips, one of the organizers suspected to be Billy Frederick Malata is narrating how DPP has been financing nationwide demonstrations taking place.
In another leaked phone call conversation suspected to be between Malata and another lead organiser Phunziro Mvula, the two are engaged in a heated argument as the former is accusing the latter of pocketing and misusing money amounting to K2.2 million from DPP Director of Legal Affairs Charles Mhango.
Mvula is heated telling Malata to back off as the two are not in any alliance agreement to be organising joint demonstrations.
“Nde olo mtatenga vuto lako ndichani? I don’t report to you. You are not my auditor to be auditing me. For your own information the money I got is K1.2 million and not the K2.2 million you are alleging,” responds a highly charged Mvula.
The conversation ends with Malata accusing Mvula of being selfish at the expense of Malawians which he claims to represent.
There was no immediate reaction from the concerned parties, as they could not be reached as we went to press.
Meanwhile, the nationwide demonstrations which have been scheduled for Thursday and Friday have commenced in Blantyre with a handful of demonstrators turning up.
