The main apposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed concern with acts of violence which occured in Blantyre before a political rally held by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) senior officials at Bangwe township.
In a statement, DPP spokesperson Shadrick Namalomba the political violence uncalled for, primitive and with no stand in modern democracy.
“If some elements in the MCP are still nostalgic of those bad old days of terror, we strongly appeal to them to realize that such a period of shame and a dent on the history of this country ought not to be repeated.
“Even if some history of Malawi has to repeat itself, certainly that Dark Age history of massacring people for holding different views has no space in a democratic dispensation.
“Let the Chakwera/ Chilima led government apprehend their hooligans who unleashed terror on innocent Malawians. We appeal to the Malawi Police to exercise their duty without fear or favour.
“Let us not allow our country to degenerate into chaos whereby political hooliganism becomes a menace and threat to our democracy. It is disheartening that the perpetration of violence by the MCP party cadres happened at an MCP rally where the
Minister of Homeland Security was guest of honor.
“If chaos, violence and terror can reign in the full view of the minister responsible for homeland security, how can the citizenry be assured of their personal safety?” He said
Namalomba said the party feels highly aggrieved as it is alleged that some of the victims of this vicious cycle of violence were attacked simply on the basis that they put on DPP clothes.
“What is more saddening is that among those attacked were innocent individuals that had put on blue jerseys meant for their support towards Manchester City and Chelsea clubs.
“The DPP is even appalled that despite the terror that was unleashed on innocent people, the MCP top brass has not taken the initiative to condemn it.
“This shows the continued disregard for the citizenry by the MCP. The MCP cannot change and will not change. It is the same party of darkness and death. Don’t destroy this country. Resign and leave Malawians in peace,” he said
