The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has cancelled the mega rally which was slated for this weekend at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe.
Party president Peter Mutharika, who has been outside the country for some weeks was supposed to be the main speaker.
A statent signed by the party’s spokesperson Shadric Namalomba said the move is to give members to commemorate the freedom day.
“The 11th November of each year is the day we remember all those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought, and died, for our freedom in the first and second World Wars.
“To allow members of the DPP to join their fellow Malawians in commemorating this day, which is cerebrated on a Sunday closest to the 11th November, the much anticipated Masintha rally slated for the 12th November 2023, has been postponed until further notice.
“To the war veterans living, we thank, salute and wish you good health and long life. To the fallen heroes, may their souls rest in eternal peace,” he said.
A few days ago, Namalomba who confirmed that Mutharika travelled outside the country, did not give specific destinations and the date he will be back, for security reasons.
