Some Concerned Citizens People Power Movement member are calling for the resignation of their leader Edward Kambanje who is being accused of abusing his power by sending his with to Ghana, on a Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) sponsored trip.
Beatrice Kambanje is among a group of stakeholders, which includes human rights defenders and media representatives who are in Ghana to appreciate the Integrated System to Track Misinformation and Disinformation Trends.
MACRA is under fire for its intention to purchase the system, which politicians, activists and both local and international human right organisations have dubbed it ‘a surveillance device.’
In an interview with Capital FM, Movement’s operations manager, Osman Dagiya, accused Kambanje of betraying the group by assigning his non-member wife to a tour without consulting others.
Dagiya called for Kambanje’s immediate resignation, warning of potential removal actions if he does not comply.
In defense, Kambanje stated the person sent was a trusted member and highlighted that she had previously been delegated by their executive.
He questioned the scrutiny faced by his movement, pointing out that other organizations also sent representatives without similar questioning.
MACRA want to purchase the system which is pegged at USD 1.5 million (over MWK 3 billion).
