The High Court Financial Crimes Division has varied bail conditions for the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima who is answering corruption charges.
He is being accused of Corruptly receiving US$280, 000 from businessman Zunneth Sattar and US$19 million for assisting Sattar’s company to get a contract from Malawi Defense Force and Malawi Police Service.
Financial Crimes Court Judge Redson Kapindu has ordered that Chilima’s passport be handed over to the State President because as the Vice President, he can not travel without his permission, unlike the earlier condition through which the passport was in the State’s custody.
Further, the Judge has ordered that Chilima should be informing the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the court 72 hours before any foreign trip, not for authority seeking but just sharing of information.
The condition that the Veep should be reporting to the ACB every three months has been struck off.
Meanwhile, the court has set August 25 for plea taking and directions.
