Limbe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Thursday sentenced 25-year-old Ganizani Kamuna and 21-year-old Peter Welosi to 20 years imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for robbery.

According to Limbe Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Maxwell Jailosi, the court heard through state prosecutor Armson Joseph of Bangwe Police Post that the two committed the offence on November 3 this year in Bangwe Township.

“The court heard that the two whilst armed with panga knives and axes, broke into the house of Clemence Luwenga where they assaulted the couple before going away with assorted items like phones, Plasma TV screen, Genset and other items all valued at K1,989,000,” said Jailosi.

Jailosi said the two were arrested at Luchenza in Thyolo and some of the stolen items like a generator and plasma screen were recovered.

Both Kamuna and Welosi pleaded guilty and admitted to the charge of robbery and in mitigation, they asked the court for leniency on the grounds that they have families to

In his submission, the state prosecutor, asked the court to mete out a stiffer sentence, saying the duo posed a great threat to the lives of the victims since they injured the family and also wanted to steal a 10-month-old baby, cases which are now rampant, according to Jailosi.

Passing sentence, however, Limbe Senior Resident Magistrate Austin Mchilima concurred with the state and slapped the two with 20 years IHL to deter other would-be offenders.

Kamuna comes from Nang’ombe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimaliro, while Welosi hails from Lolo Village in T/A Naseta both in Thyolo District.
