The newly appointed leader of the opposition in Parliament, George Chaponda, has promised Malawians to expect a strong opposition side in parliament.
The Mulanje South West legislator said this today in his first media briefing since his appointment by the party leader, Professor Peter Muthalika, last month.
Chaponda described the immediate opposition led by Kondwani Nankhumwa as ‘weak and divided’.
“Malawians should expect a strong opposition. You have complained in the past of a weak opposition. This time you will see a strong opposition, but also one that is united in its office, in its effort to provide hope for the common man,” said Chaponda.
In addition, Chaponda has promised an opposition that will provide constructive criticism to the government.
However, he hinted at bringing back the surfaced hot issues like the Zunneth Sattar case as well as the Bridge Foundation Issue.
Meanwhile, Chaponda did not agree or deny when asked if there are any chances to work with the immediate past leader of the opposition, Kondwani Nankhumwa.
“He has his party in parliament; he will be speaking, and we will see if he comes to our side to join us on certain issues. Why not? He can talk, but we don’t know whether he would like to be on the opposition side. We don’t know; it’s up to him,” he said.
He further asked journalists to be professional when writing about issues of national interest.
