Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament George Chaponda has condemned acts of violence in the country, saying that they are a threat to the very foundation of our democracy.
In a statement released on Monday, Chaponda said what happened in Mponela on Sunday, when a minibus belonging to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was torched, is disturbing and criminal.
The minibus which was retuming from a rally held in Ntchisi and addressed by DPP Central Region vice president, Alfred Gangata, was intercepted, shot at, and set ablaze by individuals alleged to be youths affiliated with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
“This is not only barbaric, it is utterly unacceptable and must be condemned by all peace-loving Malawians. Let it be known that Mponela is fast becoming a chilling symbol of political terror in our country.
“It was at this same trading centre that members of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) were viciously hacked. Today, it is DPP members who have suffered. Who will be next?
“This violence is not isolated, it is systematic. It is meant to instill fear in the hearts of opposition. supporters, to silence dissent, and to weaken democratic engagement as we approach the September 16, 2025, General Elections. But let me make this crystal clear: we will not be intimidated. The opposition remains resolute, and the people of Malawi will not be cowed by violence or threats.
“I call upon the Malawi Police Service to rise above mere verbal condemnations and take swift, concrete action. The perpetrators must be arrested, prosecuted, and brought to justice without delay. Failure to do so will only embolden more lawlessness and deepen the public’s mistrust in our security institutions.
“Furthermore, I appeal to the international community and the diplomatic corps in Malawi to closely monitor the situation and to engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, tolerance, and the rule of law prevail. Malawi’s democracy is at a critical juncture, and we need the support of our international partners to safeguard it.
“To President Lazarus Chakwera and the leadership of the Malawi Congress Party, I say this: condemn this violence not just in word, but in actions. Your silence, or worse, complicity will be judged harshly by history. Malawi deserves better. We deserve a peaceful campaign season, free from fear, free from violence, and grounded in democratic principles,” he said
