President Lazarus Chakwera has donated K2 million towards war veterans in the country.

Chakwera made the donation as he inaugurated this year’s Poppy Week ahead of the Poppy Day celebration slated for November 6.

Speaking after inaugurating the Poppy Week, Chakwera said there is need for the country to promote the welfare of the war veterans as they contributed immensely to the peace that is being enjoyed currently.

Chakwera observed that the Poppy Week should give people time to reflect on the heavy cost wars have caused around the world.

“It is a time when we remember the heavy cost of selfish wars, so that we may be forewarned about never taking the peace we enjoy for granted,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi leader then proceeded to purchase the first poppy at K2 million as his contribution for this year’s event.

In his remarks Chaiperson of the war veterans General Henry Odillo (retired) hailed Chakwera for the efforts he is undertaking to ensure that the welfare of the war veterans is safeguarded.

“I must mention that the Commander-In-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force has been very supportive towards this course and it is our appeal to the corporate world to emulate what the Commander-In-Chief is doing by procuring these poppies,” said Odillo.

Chakwera is this Saturday expected to take part in a fundraising golf tournament organised by the Malawi Defence Force whose proceeds will go towards the war veterans.
