…as he launches National Anti-
Corruption awareness campaign
President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday launched the national anti-corruption awareness campaign with a call to Malawians to start regarding corruption as an enemy that is suffocating the country’s growth.
The National-Corruption campaign was launched at the close of a two-day National Anti-Corruption conference held in Blantyre which drew together stakeholders from various sectors to brainstorm on how best the country can combat corruption.
“Corruption is our biggest enemy and it is not welcome here and that corruption is our biggest enemy must be our attitude from today going forward,” said the Malawi leader repeatedly attracting cheers from delegates that converged at Mount Soche Hotel for the two-day conference.
Chakwera has since urged relevant stakeholders to take a leading role in the fight against corruption. The Malawi leader observed that those that are welcoming corruption in their various spaces are accomplices of the challenges that the country is currently facing.
“To those that are still practising corruption and those intending to venture into it I have a message for you. God is against you. Malawi is against you. I am against you and we are coming after you. When we find you the law will deal with you,” said Chakwera sending a signal on his commitment to fight corruption in the country.
In his remarks Justice Minister Titus Mvalo described the two-day conference as an eye opener where delegates have had an opportunity to engage in a serious and honest discussion on the fight against corruption.
“Enough is enough. We need to create an environment that is uncomfortable for the corrupt. Let’s create a hostile environment for the corrupt,” said Mvalo.
Earlier, representatives of 12 different pillars in the fight against corruption signed their commitments in the fight against corruption.
The 12 are the Executive, Judiciary. Legislature, Academia, Local Government, Private sector, Media, Civil Society, Traditional leaders, Faith Community, The Youth as well as Women.
The National Anti-Corruption conference was orgainsed under the theme re-setting the country’s moral tone.
