Human Rights Ambassadors have asked President Lazarus Chakwera to call for referendum or leave the highest office, together with his Vice, Saulos Chilima.
According to a letter of notice issued by Human Rights Ambassadors, signed by their Chairperson Ben Longwe, yhe organization plans to hold demonstrations on September 28, 2022 intended on forcing Chakwera to call for a referendum.
“The demonstrations are meant to to force the head of state of Malawi, His Exellency Dr Lazarus Chakwera to call for referendum or alternatively recuse himself and Vice president Dr Saulos Chilima from discharging national duties as president of the Republic of Malawi and His Vice accordingly,” reads part of the letter.
Currently, Malawi is faced with shortage of forex, fuel as well as persistent electricity blackouts.
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) described this as a sign that Malawi is turning into a failed State.
“If the Tonse Alliance Government has no solutions in sight for this crisis, they should accept their shortcomings, step aside and let a competent team lead this country forward,” said HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence
