Leading mobile telecommunications company Airtel Malawi has reiterated its efforts to enhance data and network quality across Malawi amid security challenges on its primary fibre link in Mozambique.
In a statement released on Friday signed by the company’s Acting Managing Director Abdul Shaik, Airtel Malawi among other things has planned to acquire additional capacity for its international data links and additional local fibre providers to address recent network challenges impacting voice and data services.
This comes just a day after the company’s data and network connectivity faced a hitch when the primary fibre link from Mozambique faced security challenges and the backup links through Zambia were impacted by prolonged power outages.
“To mitigate such unforeseen circumstances and ensure quality service, we have added ESCOM as an additional local fiber service provider to provide further service protection on our major routes. Internationally, we are acquiring additional protection capacity on our fiber link from Tanzania. These initiatives will be completed by the end of January 2025 and a subsequent update will be shared on the same,” reads part of the statement.
Currently, Airtel Malawi has multiple international data fibre links with the main link from Mozambique and two back up links from Zambia. The other two are from local fibre service providers.
Following the recent service interruptions, Airtel Malawi has taken into consideration the need for enhancements that will make the network more robust and reliable, ensuring an improved voice and data experience for its customers.
