The Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an African-based organization that seeks to catalyse agriculture transformation in the continent has on Tuesday launched a 2023-2027 Malawi strategy which aims to advance sustainable agricultural productivity and diversification through inclusive markets and trade.

The strategy is in line with pillar number one of the Malawi 2063 which focuses on Agricultural Productivity and commercialisation.

Speaking at the launch, Secretary to the president Collin Zamba said government supports the strategy as it aligns well with the Malawi 2063 Agenda.

Zamba said the strategy is standing on three points which are wealth creation, food security and job creation.

“As government we applaud the step taken by AGRA in Malawi by coming up with this strategy that is well aligned with our agenda and we know that if this is well implemented it will benefit Malawians. Government is committed to continue creating a conducive environment for organisations to come up with plans and strategies that aim to develop Malawi”, she said.

On her part, AGRA country representative Sophie Chitedze said the entry point of the strategy is to advance agricultural productivity in the country.

Chitedze said the strategy is being launched after alot of consultations with different stakeholders in order for it to be productive.

“AGRA is proud today to launch this strategy that is part of the country’s agenda and is a sign that we are here to support government of Malawi’s agenda therefore we are happy to launch the strategy. The strategy seeks to bridge the gap that is there in access to markets and trade. This came out from the consultations we had and we look forward to having farmers know where they can sell their products even when the crops are still in their fields. Agriculture must be business oriented”, said Chitedze.

AGRA is focused on putting smallholder farmers at the centre of the continent’s growing economy by transforming agriculture from a solitary struggle to survive into farming as a business that thrives.
