The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) deputy secretary general, Chris Thaulo has said that the electoral alliance involving the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM and his party will be announced soon.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Thaulo said alliance talks are at an advanced stage.
He said the parties will soon announce their presidential candidate for the September 16 General Elections.
It is yet to be seen whether DPP will get both the presidential candidate and running mate positions, as they have been insisting that in any alliance they will be part of, they will get both positions.
In a statement released recently, the party’s national publicity secretary Shadric Namalomba rebished reports that UTM president Dalitso Kabambe will lead the alliance which the party is involved in, describing the as completely groundless.
“It is with great disappointment that we address the recent spread of false information regarding our party’s alliance talks. Certain individuals have intentionally spread deceptive propaganda in pursuit of their own personal agendas.
“We want to make it clear that allegations of Kabambe being selected to lead an alliance are completely groundless. Additionally, the insinuations that His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the Former President of the Republic of Malawi and President of Democratic Progressive Party is incapable of running for president due to health concerns are utterly unfounded. His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is in excellent health.
“Interestingly, these same individuals were previously advocating for the Age Limit bill, which aimed to prevent His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika from running for president. This reveals their persistent efforts to undermine our party’s leadership,” said Namalomba
He added; “we want to make it clear tha regardless of any alliances, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will be our party’s presidential candidate.
“The decision for who will be running mate to His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is solely up to him, considering the best interests of our party and Malawi.
“We urge our supporters to ignore these baseless claims and remain focused on our mission to serve Malawi. We will not be deterred by those who seek to spread malicious rumors and hinder our progress”.
