Chilima K1 million to war veterans

The Vice President Saulosi Claus Chilima has donated K1 million towards Veterans and Ex-service League of Malawi (Velom) to help support war veterans.
Chilima made the donation during the presentation of the second poppy held on Tuesday at the Office of the Vice president.
He commended VELOM for taking care of the war Veterans.
“Taking care of war Veterans is one way of appreciating their service to the nation,” added Chilima.
Chairperson for Velom, General Henry Odilo (retired) commended the private sector for the support it renders to the organisation but he appealed for more support in helping the veterans.
Speaking during the 2023 Poppy appeal week on 27th October Odillo disclosed that this year they are targeting to raise K100 Million, which will be channeled towards the maintenance of houses for war veterans at the war memorial home in Zomba.

“So far there are nine remaining war veterans who are based in Zomba,”He said
This event was the second, ahead of the Poppy day function which will be held on 12 November in Zomba.
The first one was held on Friday where President Lazarus Chakwera got the first poppy.
Poppy Week seeks to raise funds for supporting ex-servicemen and war veterans through the selling of poppy flowers.

It comes before Remembrance Day, which comes on 12 November each year, when citizens remember war veterans through the laying of wreaths at war memorial towers.

In Malawi, the day also commemorates fallen soldiers who died in other military operations.
