7 arrested for breaking and theft, 12 motorcycles recovered in Lilongwe

Lilongwe Police, on January 22, 2024 arrested additional seven suspects and recovered 12 motorcycles, in the incident that occurred in December last year when criminals, after conniving with security guards, broke into a warehouse belonging to a Chinese national at Area 4, and stole 46 brand-new motorcycles and 84 bales of secondhand clothes (Kaunjika) all valued at K155 million.

According to Lilongwe Police public relations officer Inspector Hastings Chigalu, the suspects have been identified as Davie Livalo, 34, Paul Mkambeni, 36, Aaron Jere, 29, Chifundo Makele, 29, Ken Mbewe, 29, Tamandani Matope, 27, Chifuniro Makele, 29, and Chifundo Phiri, 25.

“In December, after police made a recovery of 30 bales of the secondhand clothes, a motorcycle, and arrests of two people including a watchman, further investigations established that the identified suspects were operating a motorcycle taxi (Kabaza) business at Areas 25 and 50, using some of the stolen motorcycles.

“A police raid at the suspects’ houses in the wee hours of Monday, recovered six motorcycles, whilst the other five, were recovered at Nkhota-kota Boma.

“Meanwhile, manhunt for one of the remaining leading suspects in the breaking, famously identified as Nana among his peers, is still underway,” he said

Davie Livalo and Paul Mkambeni come from Ntcheu, Aaron Jere is from Mzimba, Chifundo Makele comes from Mulanje, Ken Mbewe hails from Phalombe, Tamandani Matope hails from Zomba, whilst Chifundo Phiri comes from Kasungu District.
