According to Lilongwe Police assistant public relations officer, Constable Khumbo Sanyiwa , the court heard through Lilongwe Police Prosecutor Sub Inspector Vincent Ntalawe, that the convicts, who include a security guard and a gardener, committed the offence during the night of March 7, last year at Area 6 where they broke into the warehouse and went away with brand-new motorcycle parts worth K14 million.
“Appearing in court, all the convicts pleaded guilty to the charge of breaking and theft. In mitigation, the convicts asked the court for leniency saying they are first time offenders, and bread winners for their families.
“But in his submission, Prosecutor Ntalawe asked the court for a stiffer punishment to the convicts saying the offence is serious in nature, and was planned before commission of the same,” said Sanyiwa
Passing his sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Amran Phiri, concurred with the State hence the 7-year imprisonment sentence to deter other would be offenders.
