The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has dispatched 1400 metric tones of relief maize by train for the distribution in the Eastern Region.
Speaking at Kanengo Silos, during the sending off ceremony, DoDMA Deputy Director for Disaster Response Fyawupi Mwafango said the consignment will be dropped at Liwonde Admarc warehouse, pending distributions to various districts in the Eastern Region.
“This is our second trip to Liwonde Admarc Warehouse. We have already shipped 2500 metric tones out of initial 4000 metric tones and this time around the train has carried 1400 metric tones” said Mwafango.
According to Mwafango, the next sites to receive relief maize in Southern and Eastern Regions will be Limbe in Blantyre and Balaka.
Apart from beneficiaries registration hiccups in Blantyre that saw registration being suspended, Mwafango said there have been no challenges encountered since the program rolled out.
To his part, the National Food Reserve Agency (NRFA) through its Operations Director Cosmas Samuel Pelekani said they have dispatched a total of 16,960 metric tones to DoDMA for distribution.
“So far we have procured 83,000 metric tones and out of that, 16,960 has already been dispatched to DoDMA for distribution to Malawians” said Pelekani.
The program was launched in September this year and the distribution started in Southern Region where the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) declared that it’s the most hit region among all in the country.
After the Southern part of the country, the project was rolled out to the Central Region and from December it will reach the Northern part of the country.
Initially, 1,265 000 households in the South and Eastern Regions were targeted to benefit from the 2025 Lean Season Insecurity Response Program (LS-FIRP), and so far 1,100 000 have already been reached.
