Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has announced that money amounting to MK70 Million has been disbursed to their 14 affiliated Clubs as annual grants after qualifying for the pre-access requirements.
In a press statement released on 22 May 2024, Sulom said 14 teams received MK5 Million each while two rookies, Baka City Football Club and CRECK Sporting Club are yet to get their funds after failing to finalize the required documentation.
“SULOM, in collaboration with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), acknowledges the critical importance of financial support to the clubs for their sustainability and operations. In recognition of this, the subventions have significantly increased from K1 million to K20 million for each club over the past two seasons,” reads the statement in part.
The MK5 Million that has been disbursed to each Club is part of the MK20 Million subvention that Sulom pledged to the Clubs earlier this year. Half of the pledged subvention is expected to be paid by FAM and league sponsors, TNM Pl is entitled to pay the other half.
FAM has released MK80 Million to Sulom to disburse the money and the Association has pledged to release another tranche of money later.
The Association’s competitions and communications director, Gomezgani Zakazaka attributed the delay in releasing the money to logistics.
“The process started yesterday [Monday]. For now, each club will get K5 million and we will pay the remaining amount later,” he told Nation Sport.
Sulom Treasure, Allie Mwachande said the two clubs, Baka City and CRECK Sporting who are yet to receive their chunk, will get it after fulfilling all the conditions.
Sulom says the substantial increase in the subvention demonstrates its commitment to reviving, reforming, and rebranding the elite league.
“SULOM is dedicated to ensuring that clubs have the necessary resources to manage their daily operations effectively. We would therefore like to assure all stakeholders that another tranche of funds will be disbursed to the clubs shortly to further support their operational needs,” adds the statement.
