The ‘Kumayamika’ hitmaker Rashley, real name Happy Jumbe, has issued a heartfelt apology to Malawians and the music industry over a 2021 scandal involving a nude video that circulated on social media, urging people not to judge him by his past mistake.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Tuesday evening, Rashley said he was inspired by recent remarks from fellow artist Driemo, who highlighted the challenges of being “canceled” in the entertainment industry.
“I ask my fellow musicians to forgive me, Malawians please forgive me, my wife and my family please forgive me. It will never happen again,” pleaded Rashley.
Rashley also urged fans to support him musically as he seeks a comeback.
Commenting on the development, social media influencer and CEO of PACT Malawi, Pemphero Mphande, highlighted the mental health struggles behind Rashley’s public apology, saying the musician had been “suffering in silence” and battling depression.
“Yesterday, I met Rashley and he sounded down. This morning he told me he was going to do the live because he was suffering in silence, he was depressed and that if he didn’t speak up, he may lose his life,” Mphande revealed.
He added that Rashley’s tears during the live broadcast reflected the heavy toll public shame had taken on him.
“He is a broken young man. Let him find happiness again and forgive him for the mistakes he made when he was younger. He has a family to support. I wish Rashley all the best and if he ever needs help, I am 100% available,” continued Mphande.
One of the musicians and producer, Stich Fray, also voiced his support, saying he hopes Malawians have forgiven Rashley and pledged to stand by him.
“Rashley mw, you are always in my heart bro, I take you as my own. Ndalira nawe mu Live yako mene unalira muja, a Malawi talira nawe. Uthenga wako a Malawi awunva, apa mitima yawo yafewa,” said Stich Fray.
Meanwhile, organizers of the UMP Festival have confirmed Rashley as one of the headlining local artists at this year’s event scheduled for October 21–27. The festival, expected to feature international performers alongside Malawi’s top acts, will also provide a platform for Rashley to reconnect with fans.
Rashley’s heartfelt apology has been widely welcomed, with fans, fellow musicians, and mental health advocates hopeful that the ‘Kumayamika’ star will rebuild his reputation and make a strong musical comeback.
