State President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday responded to various questions in parliament from Members of Parliament (MPs).
Among major questions from the opposition side, the president was supposed to answer issues about hunger, economy and status of the government into subsidy programmes.
In response after being asked for a confirmation if the IMF credit facility program is on track as Malawi economy continues to face significant challenges, Chakwera reminded the house that the current economic challenges the country is facing, emanates from exogenous shocks the country continues to face not wasteful spending spending or excessive borrowing as alluding in the question.
However, he said government is working closely with IMF to conclude its first review of the program and clear their way for the next dispersement of funding to benefit Malawians.
The President said his administration continues to secure different financial support from key development partners which underscores the restoration of confidence that the partners have in this administration management of public finance.
On the issue of government plan to ensure timely and effective delivery of the affordable inputs program, after reports that most beneficiaries are yet to receive the inputs, Chakwera agreed that the distribution of fertilizer faced importation challenges because of restrictions on forex access.
He further made an assurance that all registered farmers will be reached within effective time.
Meanwhile, in his reaction leader of opposition George Chaponda expressed disappointment with Chakwera’s responses.
He further slammed the President for shunning question by Machinga East Parliamentarian Esther Jolobala who wanted to asked if President’s campaign promises of three meals a day remains priority, as hunger is ravaging the country.
“The disappointment is that we expected the President to answer all the questions. But the last question, which was relating to hunger in this country where people are eating chitedze, was not responded to. We thought the leader of the House should have extended time in order to allow that important questions to be answered”.
