National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has urged institutions and stakeholders in Thyolo District to license their boreholes and other water resources as one way of ensuring that there is sustainable use of water in the district.
NWRA Senior Civic Education and Public Relations Officer, Masozi Kasambala made the call on Tuesday during a District Executive Committee meeting which was organized to brief the council on the mandate and functions of the company.
Kasambala said the licensing of water resources, among other things, will ensure that domestic and industrial use of the water resources is in line with objective of Malawi National Water Policy and Water Resources Act.
“We have pleaded with the Council to share and encourage people with boreholes and other water resources for commercial purposes to license it so that we have sustainable use.
“If we have authorised sources of water in Thyolo, people will not suffer from waterborne diseases such as Cholera hence they will significantly take part towards development of the society and the country,” he said.
He added that failure to register water resources will force the authority to close down the facilities.
Thyolo District Water Development Officer, Evance Phiri, commended the Authority saying the briefing was vital to the council as it has given a picture on how best water resources can be regulated.
“The licensing will enable people to have water resources that are free from contamination as such; it will reduce pressure on medical resources,” said Phiri.
Phiri added that the Council will roll out mass sensitization to all communities around the district to impart knowledge on people on how best the initiative will improve their lives.
