President Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika mourn the death of Malawi football legend Esau Kanyenda, calling it a significant national loss.
In a Tuesday statement, the President said they are deeply saddened by the former Flames striker’s passing, describing Kanyenda as a true son of Malawi who dedicated his energy to lifting the nation’s banner abroad, including his time with Russian club Rostov.
At the peak of his career, Kanyenda played a crucial role in Malawi’s qualification for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, a landmark in the country’s football history.
The President added that even after retirement, Kanyenda remained a steady guiding voice for local football administrators, showing unwavering commitment to the sport’s growth in Malawi.
