Chitipa United coach McDonald Mtetemela played down his team’s TNM Super League title chances after their 2-0 win over Bangwe All Stars kept them two points clear of second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Mtetemela’s men scored on 80th and 93rd minutes through Lorenzo Ghedo and Godfrey Kwinyokwa to return top of the standings with 39 points from 21 games, three more than Bullets.
But speaking after the match Mtetemela said his focus remains building a strong team for the next two seasons.
“Iam happy not because we have returned top of standings but because of the three points because my aim when joining this team was to build a strong team for the next two years but I thank God we are doing fine and my boys have been adhering to our instructions. I’ll continue focusing on building the team rather than thinking of position one” said Mtetemela
Chitipa United’s remaining fixtures include two potentially key games against teams perched at top four of the table: Away to second placed Bullets and a home fixture against fourth placed Silver Strikers.
His opponent Abel Mkandawire hailed excellent goalkeeping by Chitipa United goalkeeper George Chikooka for denying them goals.
“We played very well but football is about scoring goals, we created a lot of chances but their goalkeeper made a series of saves to deny us goals, they came late in the second half to score their goals, I think it wasn’t our day” said Mkandawire
Bangwe All Stars stays seventh on standings with 28 points from 21 games.
In another match, MAFCO relied on Stain Malata’s first half brace to beat Civo Service United 2-0 at Chitowe Stadium.
The result means MAFCO have climbed out of relegation as they move from 14th to 12th with 24 points from 21 games while Civil Service United are 11th with 24 points from 20 games.
