Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda has said government is geared up to upgrade rural center facilities including markets as one way of boosting the economy in the country.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Chimwendo said the government is happy to see Members of Parliament (MPs) demanding developments in their areas because this mindset will help to bring services closer to people and make sure that service delivery is improved in their respective rural areas.
Chimwendo added the upgrading of rural markets was faced with some hitches due to financial resources, and some contractors had issues in court but the issues have been sorted out, and that all projects which were already in shape will be finalized before starting new ones.
“We are not starting new growth centers, but we are making sure that we finish what we already started and as we are doing that, we have to improve farmers accessibility in terms of markets, we believe that people can sell their produce at good prices and access goods from the modern markets to improve their lives”. said Chimwendo.
According to Chimwendo the ministry is now sourcing funds to start construction of rural stadiums in some of the districts in the country including Mwanza ,Nkhata-Bay, Ntcheu and Msundwe and government will ensure that youth center facilities are available for young people especially in rural areas .
