FDH Bank PLC has unveiled a landmark five-year sponsorship deal worth MK5 billion for the Malawi Super League, ushering in what stakeholders describe as a transformative era for the country’s premier football competition.
The sponsorship package, branded “For the Love of the Game,” will see the financial institution invest MK1 billion annually into the league through 2030. FDH Bank Managing Director Noel Nkuluchi announced the deal during the FDH Bank Sports Event at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
“Our commitment has always been to grow talent from the grassroots to the global stage. Sports remains a cornerstone of national identity, a platform for talent, and a source of hope for countless Malawians,” Nkuluchi said. “It is in this spirit that I am proud to announce our new partnership with the Super League of Malawi. The league will now be called the FDH Bank Premiership.”
In what represents a significant shift in Malawian football sponsorship, FDH Bank is introducing a MK100 million Player Fund dedicated to supporting footballers during challenging times. The fund will provide MK300,000 in bereavement support to players who lose loved ones. Additionally, 30 players from each team will be enrolled in FDH Bank Life Cover, offering vital financial security for athletes and their families—a first in the league’s history.
Super League of Malawi President Brigadier General Gilbert Mittawa praised the initiative as “a game changer” for the sport. “This partnership is not merely a financial commitment; it is a powerful statement of belief in Malawian football—belief in our clubs, belief in our players, and belief in the future of our elite league,” Mittawa said.
“For the first time in our football history, we are deliberately ring-fencing resources specifically aimed at improving the welfare of the very people who make the league possible: the players.”
The annual MK1 billion investment will be strategically distributed across various aspects of the league. Prize money will account for MK375 million of the total, with the league champion set to receive MK200 million, effectively doubling the current prize of MK100 million.
Team subvention will receive MK320 million in direct financial support to participating clubs, while the dedicated Player Fund will receive MK100 million for welfare initiatives and life insurance coverage.
Administration will be allocated MK80 million for league operations and management, and MK72 million will go towards sports equipment to enhance training and match-day facilities. Individual awards recognizing outstanding player performances will receive MK24 million.
The partnership marks the conclusion of TNM PLC’s 19-year tenure as title sponsor—the longest in the league’s history.
TNM’s sustained investment helped establish and maintain professional football infrastructure in Malawi, leaving a legacy that shaped the sport’s development in the country.
