In a move that would help Malawi achieve food security, the European Union has committed€50 million that will go towards Malawi’s efforts in dealing with food insecurity.
This came out during a meeting which President Lazarus Chakwera held with Jutta Urpilainen, the European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships.
The meeting was aimed at tracking progress on the discussions which Chakwera held with the Commissioner in Brussels eight months ago.
Writing on his official facebook page Chakwera said the meeting has also provided an opportunity on the opening of dialogue between Malawi and the EU to explore the prospects of the resumption of direct budgetary support to Malawi.
“The EU Commissioner informed me that the EU’s pursuit of such investments is a vote of confidence among development partners and foreign investors in our strong performance in governance reforms that are creating a conducive environment for economic recovery and stability,” wrote Chakwera.
The EU’s commitment is coming at a time Malawi continues to win back confidence of the international community as evidenced by the recent award of the second millenium compact worth 350 million United States dollars by the Millenium Challenge Corporation, the securing of rapid credit facility from the International Monetory Fund as well all as the approval of a grant by The African Development Bank for rehabilitation of the M5 lakeshore road.
