ESCOM Limited has today supported national relief efforts by donating K200 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) Disaster Emergency Fund.
The contribution is a direct response to the devastating floods caused by recent heavy rains, which have left many families homeless and without food.
Speaking at the presentation in Lilongwe, ESCOM Director Welford Sabola, representing the Board, emphasized that ESCOM could not remain a bystander while its customers have been affected.
The heavy rains have caused widespread destruction, submerging houses and preventing children from attending school.
Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr. Justin Saidi, accepted the donation, highlighting that while K150 billion has been raised, there is still a gap in the K159 billion budget required to prevent hunger-related fatalities.
He thanked ESCOM for joining other partners in ensuring that no Malawian dies of hunger during this crisis.
The government continues to call upon well-wishers and the corporate sector to support DODMA as they reach out to those affected by the disaster.
