On Wednesday morning, opposition legislators led by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member of parliament for Blantyre City South East Sameer Suleman flocked to Kanengo where they claimed that it’s the hub for the ruling Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) rigging echeme.
They suspected that through the National Registration Bureau (NRB), the party is using a warehouse belonging to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to manipulate national registration cards for Lilongwe.
Later, Alliance for Democracy (Afford) president Enoch Chihana, his vice Timothy Ntambo, DPP secretary general Peter Mukhito and other civil society leaders joined the legislators at the warehouse.
It took Principal Secretary in the Homeland Security Ministry responsible for NRB, Mphatso Sambo, to explain the whole process to the politicians before they agreed that there was nothing sinsiter happening.
He pointed out that there is nothing sinister as the site is their holding area for national IDs that have been processed for Malawians that applied for the document, ready to be dispatched for collection, just like they do with all other regions.
Sambo has also refuted allegations that Malawi Electoral Commission gadgets were seen at the warehouse, belonging to National Food Reserve Agency.
