DPP MP dresses down own leadership

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislature for Mangochi North Constituency, Benedicto Chambo on Monday surprised many when he took to the podium dressing down his own leadership, both in Parliament and outside.

Chambo was speaking at a rally President Lazarus Chakwera held after launching the construction of a K2.5 billion worth comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care at Makanjira Health Center.

Among others, Chambo cited the opposition’s interference in important development projects such as the Salima-Lilongwe water project where some Malawians obtained a court injunction, with the support of some party officials, to stop its commencement.

He said DPP as a party, is failing to provide checks and balances in parliament due to a weak opposition.

“Opposition yake iti? A President, ku Parliament kuli opposition? Inalipotu opposition yanu, mumati mukayima mmene muja, lero anthu anakukhulupirirani, ndinu a President chifukwa chakuti munali strong in opposition, ife opposition yathu mulibe. (Which opposition Mr President, do we have any in Parliament. We had a strong opposition side during your time. Today you are the President because Malawians trusted your role when you were in opposition),” he said

Chambo further questioned the type of leadership they will provide to the country if DPP wins the 2025 elections.

“Komanso tikufuna kutenga boma 2025, kodi leadership yake idzakhala yotani (We are saying we want to takeover in 2025, what kind of leadership are we going to offer?). We are failing today, Malawians are suffering because as an opposition we are failing to help government,” he said
