The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has endorsed peaceful demonstrations organized by Citizens for Credible Elections in Malawi.
The demonstrations, slated for tomorrow, are for the resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and CEO Andrew Mpesi over allegations of bias and incompetence.
They will be held in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Mangochi.
“These two officials have consistently ignored calls from electoral stakeholders for an independent audit of the Smartmatic machine, software, the elections management system, and the voter register.
“In solidarity with the Citizens for Credible Elections, the DPP urges all Malawians who desire change to join the demonstrations and raise their voices.
“Our demand is for a truly free and fair election, and for the Malawi Electoral Commission to be led by individuals of integrity,” reads a statement signed by DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba
