DPP appoints Chaponda as leader of Opposition in Parliament

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced that Honourable George Chaponda has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

In a letter dated 7 May 2024, DPP Spokesperson, Shadreck Namalomba also announced that Honourable Lonnie Chijere is the new Commissioner in Parliament.

“The Democratic Progressive Party is pleased to announce the immediate appointment of Hon. George Thapatula Chaponda, MP as the Leader of Opposition and Hon. Lonnie Chijere, MP as Commissioner in Parliament,” reads the letter in part.

Kondwani Nankhumwa, Now the People’s Development Party (PDP) President has been serving as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament from 2020 until last week. Nankhumwa alongside other party members, were fired from the Party promoting DPP to appoint Mary Navichi to become the first female Leader of Opposition in the house but the Mulanje Central Member of Parliament challenged the appointment with a court injunction.

However, Nankhumwa last week instructed his lawyers to withdraw all court cases against the Democratic Progressive Party.

The High Court in Lilongwe on Monday vacated an injunction that was keeping Nankhumwa in the position of Leader of Opposition in Parliament allowing DPP to appoint the new Leader.
