Diplomats Car Hire has donated K7.5 million while Ekhaya Farms has released K5 million towards 2024 Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) Flag Week.
Chief Executive Officer for the Diplomats Car Hire, Triphonia Mpinganjira made a revelation this morning at the Red Cross’s send off ceremony of two cyclists that are cycling from Lilongwe to Blantyre.
“As Diplomats Car Hire we have decided to donate K7.5 million and on behalf of Ekhaya Farms CEO Chikondi Annabel Mpinganjira, let me also announce their commitment of K5 million.
“We have decided to support Red Cross this way, knowing their commendable efforts to support victims of natural disasters” said Mpinganjira
Apart from the two, the vice president of the Republic of Malawi Saulos Chilima has donated K1.5 million while Umodzi Park offered sending off venue worthy K6 million. In addition, the Malawi Police Service has also offered free police officers to provide security to the cyclists.
However, with the K2 million donated by the State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera last Friday, the total amount that was raised until morning was K21.5 million.
In his remarks, Saulos Chilima has commended everyone who has taken part in responding to the calls by the Malawi Red Cross Society.
He said “First is to commend the organizers Malawi Red Cross for taking the initiative to raise money to support those that are in need”
“And therefore as we’ve done in the past even when there is disaster or not we need to be part of the calls like this one where initiatives have been taken to source whether it is money or goods for those that are in need”
“But this morning we have two of our friends who have volunteered to cycle from here to Blantyre, for the effort to contribute towards the K160 million that is needed we are very appreciative of those that have volunteered and second those that have responded”
MRCS President Innocent Majiya has thanked the State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice, Saulos Chilima for being on the forefront to support the initiative.
He, further, expressed optimism that they will beat the targeted figure of K160 million.
“let me appreciate the President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, his Vice Saulos Chilima and all companies for responding to our calls but we still have a long way to go to reach our target but iam pretty sure we will beat that target. Let me also appeal to other well-wisher to come in and support us” said Majiya
The cyclists who have volunteered themselves to cycle from Lilongwe are Dziwani Mwachumu and Kenneth Chikazunga and they will arrive tomorrow in Blantyre.
MRCS Flag Week, which is held to raise funds for various activities, follows commemoration of the Red Crescent Day which falls on May 8 every year.
