“Violence must never be accepted as a method of political expression or public engagement. We are deeply troubling acts of violence reported during public demonstrations held nationwide on 26th June 2025, organized by the Citizens for Credible Elections.
“As a body mandated to promote peace, unity, and national cohesion, the Commission finds it necessary to speak out against actions that threaten these core values. The Commission unequivocally condemns these heinous acts of violence, viewing them as direct violations of the constitutional rights of Malawians, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
“The repetition of such incidents signals a disturbing trend of impunity, especially when perpetrators act openly without fear of arrest or prosecution. The Commission calls upon the Malawi Police Service and all relevant authorities to promptly investigate these incidents, identify and prosecute those responsible, and implement measures to prevent such violence in the future. Continued inaction erodes public confidence in law enforcement institutions and poses a serious threat to national unity.
“The Commission reminds all stakeholders actors, civil society, and the general public including government institutions, political that peace and unity are the bedrock of our democracy. Violence must never be accepted as a method of political expression or public engagement. The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding peace, fostering dialogue, and ensuring accountability across all sectors of society in pursuit of justice and national harmony,” reads part of the statement
