Civil servants in the country have threatened to down tools when Christmas and New Year holidays come to an end.
According to a letter by the Civil servants Trade Union (CSTU) to the Government Negotiating Team (GNT), the decision has been reached following government’s failure to address their concerns.
They want their salaries increased to tally with the prevailing economic woes, among other demands.
Dated December 21 and signed by CSTU and Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) General secretaries, Madalitso Njolomole and Charles Kumchenga respectively, the letter said the national wide industrial strike will be called off until government addresses all their concerns.
Njolomole said they presented their concern to GNT during their meeting held on December 16, 2022 at Kumbali Lodge in Lilongwe.
Meanwhile, Labour Minister Vella Kamtukule told the local media that that she has seen the letter.
She however refused to comment saying GNT is best placed to speak on the matter.
The government negotiating team operates under the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC).
