Chilima attends Remembrance Day in Zomba

Vice President Saulos Chilima Sunday paid homage to world wars fallen heroes who fought the two wars under the Kings African Rifles (KAR).

Chilima arrived at the Zomba Memorial Tower at exactly 10:58 am and was welcomed by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, Dr Paul Valentino Phiri and the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Marlyn Yolamu.

Soon after his arrival two maroons were sounded followed by a two-minute silence in honour of the fallen heroes of the first and second world wars and those that died during conflicts in Mozambique and peace keeping missions in Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Vice President later laid a wreath ahead of the Army Commander, Malawi Police Inspector General, Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara, Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, Chairperson of Veteran Ex-service men League of Malawi (VELOM), retired Army General Henry Odilo, diplomats and other dignitaries.

Representative of the ex-service men Warrant Officer Class 2, Frank Masiyano and another representative of serving officers Warrant Officer Class 1, Evans Zinga also laid their wreaths in honour of those that died in the war front between 1914 to 1918, 1939 to 1945 and subsequent conflicts and the United Nations peace keeping missions.

The fallen heroes were also honoured by the sounds of the Last Post and the Sunrise days and a parade by MDF.

There were also interdenominational prayers as the Christian and Muslim clergies praised the brevity of the fallen heroes.
