A 32-year-old man, identified as Salabadika Kauma, on Sunday was found dead in Namizimu forest around Traditional Authority (TA) Katuli in Mangochi district.
Mangochi Police Publicist inspector Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed the development saying it is being suspected that Kauma died due to smoke from charcoal he was burning in the forest.
“Family to the deceased reported his missing to the Katuli police Unit, who later initiated a search for his whereabouts with the help of members of the community.
“The body of Kauma was discovered later on 22nd October, 2023, 20 kilometers away from the charcoal burning site,” said Daudi.
She added that postmortem results conducted by medical personnel at Katuli Health Centre revealed that Kauma succumbed to suffocation.
Meanwhile, Police in Mangochi are urging the general public to avoid the malpractice of charcoal burning, saying it is illegal to do so.
Kauma hailed from Nsalure village, T/A Katuli, in Mangochi.
