President Lazarus Chakwera has appealed to Malawians to grant him another five-year term to steer Malawi’s governance works his administration began during his first term.
Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party said this during his party’s official manifesto launch on Saturday at Bingu National stadium in Lilongwe.
Standing before a sea of red and black, with the weight of a turbulent first term behind him and the hope of a second having in the balance, Chakwera made a passionate appeal to the gathering; “Give me five more years to finish what we started.”
He painted a vision of a future anchored on five strategic pillars – food Security, job creation, wealth generation, governance reforms and enhanced public service delivery.
He said the pillars are designed to address the country’s most pressing challenges and to accelerate national transformation towards the goals Malawi 2063.
“These are not just buzzwords, they are pillars of transformation that speak directly to the real struggles of the Malawian people.
Our vision is for a prosperous Malawi not just for today, but for the future generations. I am confident that this manifesto will serve as a robust blueprint for our partnership in advancing Malawi’s development agenda, having worker together over the past five years, I look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts over the next five years,” he stated.
In his manifesto ,Chakwera has vowed to introduce an investment account for every Malawian child at birth, Worthy K500,000 to be accessed at age 18 for education, entrepreneurship, or housing, to introduce a “Ten-Ten Challenge,” initiative where government ought to support 10,000 Malawian entrepreneurs with K10 million each and a national development blueprint delivering 72 new public services across 24 key sectors, including: Internet in all public schools, Construction of new universities, One irrigation scheme per EPA, Electrification of health centres, National digital ID integration, Disability inclusion and social protection expansion.
Chakwera who in 2020 promised to create 1 million Jobs for youth, has pledged to create 3 million jobs over five years, with strong focus on youth and women, among others.
The development however, has ignited mixed reactions with social commentators calling it a missed opportunity.
A seasoned social media commentator Mac Tembo said Chakwera’s deliberate miss on Fuel and forex scarcity makes his blue print wanting.
” The MCP needed to first include the problems that Malawians are facing and how they will end them. Otherwise it is unrealistic,” said Tembo.
Andrea Gilibati a social media influencer said ; ” MCP doesnt need a new manifesto, it already has a lot of unfulfilled promises.”
Chakwera becomes the first presidential candidate to launch his manifesto a fortnight after the Malawi electoral Commision ( MEC ) officially launched the 2025 September 16 general elections.
