President Lazarus Chakwera left the country on Monday night for the United Nations General Assembly in the United States of America.
Initially the president was supposed to leave in the afternoon for the UN General Assembly via Kenya where today he is expected to attend the inauguration of Kenya’s new president William Ruto but his flight was delayed due to clearance issues by the flight engineers.
However, after an almost six hours delay the president left the country and has since landed in Kenya for the inauguration which has commenced this morning in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.
After attending the inauguration ceremony the president is expected to proceed to New York for the UN General Assembly which commences on September 13.
Commenting on the president’s trip to the US, government spokesperson Gospel Kazako said it is important that Chakwera attends the Assembly in person as apart from attending the Assembly, he is expected to have an audience with US president Joe Biden as well as head of USAID.
Beside the meetings the president is also expected to sign on behalf of Malawians a multi-million United States Dollar compact deal with the Millenium Challenge Corporation which aims at financing various projects in as far as infrastructure development is concerned in the country.
“Almost all the world leaders will be there. The president was just supposed to attend this all important meeting as it provides him with an opportunity to interact with global leaders and try to find solutions to some of the challenges rocking the country,” said Kazako.
This is the first time that Chakwera will be attending the UN General Assembly in person since ascending to the presidency in 2020.
He is expected to be back in the country on 2 October this year.
