President Lazarus Chakwera says this year`s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was a success as it offered a platform for Malawi and other Least Developed Countries (LCDs) to highlight challenges affecting them.
Chakwera was speaking Monday on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) after successfully attending the 78th UNGA held in New York, United States of America (USA).
He said, at the conference, he spoke not only for Malawi but also for LCDs concerning things that have troubled these countries.
“And then I had side meetings concerning Malawis development, investment and trade and those that need to come particularly African Americans who, for the first time, have shown tremendous determination to be part of Malawis story,” he said.
The President noted that as a result of his side meetings, on the sidelines of the UNGA, several partners pledged assistance in various government development endeavors.
And speaking in New York on September 21 when he addressed the UNGA, the Malawi leader called on world leaders and international institutions to translate their words into action by providing urgent assistance to LCD.
He also called on international lending institutions to consider cancelling debts to LCDs observing natural disasters, rising cost of living and pandemics which have affected the economies of LCDs.
