President Lazarus Chakwera has described the just ended summit a game changer to the country’s economy.
Chakwera made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon on arrival from the 77th UN General Assembly.
This was the first UN summit for Chakwera to physically attend since ascending to the presidency in 2020.
Speaking to journalists on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, Chakwera said Malawi stands to benefit a lot in several sectors from the recent UN General Assembly.
“This trip has been of great benefit to Malawi. Of course it’s the first time that I’ve attended the UN General Assembly and that in itself was a great meeting. We had several side meetings with potential investors and I believe Malawi will benefit from such meetings which will see investments in several sectors like Education, Health, Sports, Energy, Agriculture and many others so I believe that this trip has been of great importance,” said Chakwera.
Chakwera has further expressed optimism that the newly signed US$350 Million Compact Two project will completely transform the country’s infrastructure sector with roads in particular.
“The Compact deal is a done deal. I also had a chance to talk to the World Bank over a US$150 Million fund that they had already approved and the meeting we had was to map the way forward on how best we can utilize these funds to meet our needs,” said Chakwera.
Upon completion of his assignments in the United States president Chakwera passed by the United Arab Emirates where he had an audience with the royal family there.
Chakwera left the country on 12th September 2022 for the UN General Asembly but stopped by Kenya where he attended the inauguration of new Kenya President William Ruto.
