Leading telecommunications company Airtel Malawi has launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and 5G internet services on Tuesday, aimed at providing its customers with swift calling and internet services in the country.
The VoLTE will help customers access the internet and make mobile calls simultaneously while 5G internet access gives customers faster, more reliable, and higher-capacity wireless internet.
Speaking at the launch event in Lilongwe, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt the launch of the two services shows the company’s commitment to providing better services in Malawi.
Dutt said this is an innovation for the present and the future as the company has made 57 cites have 5G internet access across 10 districts in Malawi.
Dutt added that Airtel Malawi will launch more cites in the next three months.
“We have made serious updates to our network leading up to this launch this evening. I am happy to report that we have made significant upgrades to the LTE service as we have 539 cites now and 114 cites that cover internet with 2G. These advancements are aimed at improving communication across the country, as it is the backbone of the country’s development”, Dutt said.

On his part, Minister of Information and Digitalization Shadrick Namalomba thanked Airtel Malawi for being innovative and challenged telecommunication service providers in the country to emulate the same saying these services are drivers of communication in particular and development in general.
Namalomba said what Airtel Malawi has done complements the Government’s efforts towards achieving the 2063 Agenda.
“What we have witnessed today is what as a country we needed. This is a milestone for the whole nation. It marks a bold step forward in how we communicate and prepare for the future.
As a government we are in full support of these kinds of developments and our door is open for more discussions for further upgrades and investments”, said Namalomba.
Airtel Malawi has grown into one of the country’s leading internet service providers, offering nationwide connectivity through its 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, and now 5G networks.
Since introducing mobile internet in the early 2000s and later expanding to 3G in 2010, the company has continued to upgrade its infrastructure, eventually launching 4G in 2018 to meet rising data demand.
