Leading telecommunications company, Airtel Malawi, has on Wednesday unveiled the Nzeru Fund, which will see 25 students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology receive scholarships to help them start and finish their studies at the University.
The fund, which is under the Airtel Africa Foundation, comes as a relief to needy students who fail to realize their dream due to a lack of funding.
With the Airtel Nzeru Fund, 25 students each year will get, in addition to a full tuition scholarship, a monthly
stipend, hostel accommodation fees, a monthly data bundle, and a once-off pocket Wi-Fi device.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt said education is the heart of development in any country, and an investment in young minds is an investment in future development.
“Education is at the heart of nation-building. ‘Nzeru Fund’ scholarships represent Airtel’s belief that every brilliant young Malawian deserves a fair chance to succeed regardless of their
background. By investing in these future STEM leaders, we are investing in Malawi’s digital future, ensuring that no capable student is left behind,” said Dutt.
On the receiving end, Malawi University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor Prof. Address Malata said the more young people learn, the more the country is likely to develop.
Malata said she believes that supporting MUST through this scholarship is not only for the students but rather giving back to society, as these students are studying what is to become solutions to problems being faced in our societies.
“We are deeply grateful to Airtel Malawi and the Airtel Africa Foundation for this extraordinary commitment to our students. Many bright young people lose opportunities due to financial constraints. The ‘Nzeru Fund’ scholarships will not only transform their lives but will also contribute significantly to Malawi’s advancement in science, technology, and innovation,” she said.
