In a bid to help improve the quality of education in Malawi, mobile telecommunications company Airtel Malawi on Friday donated teacher and learner books worth MK2.3 million to Salima LEA school in Salima district.
The donation came from contributions that Airtel Malawi staff members made towards the initiative.
Salima LEA school was adopted by Airtel Malawi in 2010 and currently has an enrolment close to 3000 students.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Airtel Malawi Head of Brands, Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility Norah Chavula Chirwa said the donation was part of maintaining the partnership between the school and the company.
Chavula said the donation is all inclusive as the donation has also encompassed learners with special needs.
“As Airtel Malawi staff members we thought it wise to take a step to help in promoting quality education by making sure that the school has enough resources to help them to do well. The staff members themselves made contributions to get these book purchased and today we just thought of presenting them so that they can be used by both the teachers and learners”, she said.
On his part, Salima LEA School Head teacher Nathan Sambo said the donation comes at a time when the school had several gaps.
Sambo said the school lacks adequate teaching and learning materials therefore the donation came at a right time.
“We are proud today to receive this donation as it electrifies our need for books at this school. These books will help ease the teaching and learning process. However we still have a few other challenges as we now have shortage of classes and teacher houses here at Salima LEA”, Sambo said.
Primary Education Advisor for Msalura zone, Fred Bakala urged teachers and students at the school to take care and stock of the books.
He added that the best use of these books is not only in making sure that they are not damaged but also in making sure that the students get excellent results.
This is year, out of the 174 students that sat for the Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education examinations from the school, 165 students passed the examinations and 153 were selected to top secondary schools in the country.
